Chapter 32 Self-Flattering
Zhong Zhen could feel her heart racing. She quickly pulled Zhong Tianyou nearer to her and frantically said, “Mr. Feng, I’m really sorry. I didn’t ignore you on purpose as my phone battery went flat.”
She thought he had come over because he could not reach her over the phone.
What a joke! How could I have come for a mere assistant? To have me appear right here, right now at this hour is unbelievable. “Hmm, what relationship do you have with this child?” Feng Beichen asked coldly. Why do I like this boy at first sight?
He wasn’t here for her. Coincidentally, his girlfriend was admitted to this hospital as well, so he came in a rush when he received a phone call regarding a change in her condition. He needed to pass by the ICU ward in order to reach the VIP ward located further ahead.
Before Zhong Zhen could say anything, Tianyou quickly spoke up, “She is my mother, Zhong Zhen. That person is my mother too, and her name is Wen He. My name is Zhong Tianyou. Who are you?” With dark eyes full of spirit and a cute bubbly voice, how could anyone not like this boy?
He wished to talk more with the boy, but he was in a rush to see An Ran. He crouched down and with a serious tone said, “My name is Feng Beichen and I’m in a rush right now. See you again!”
With haste, he stood up and glanced at Zhong Zhen with intrigue before turning away.
“Goodbye, Uncle!” Tianyou behaved innocently as he didn’t know what the adults around him were up to.
“Goodbye, Mr. Feng. I will complete all preparatory work by today as requested.” Zhong Zhen promised while looking disheveled.
As soon as Feng Beichen disappeared from their sight, Wen He shouted excitedly, “Wow! I finally get the chance to see him in person! Now I know why he has so many girls falling for him!”
“Including you!” Tianyou shook his head helplessly and said, “Women are so naïve!”
What is wrong with society nowadays? An adult acting like a child while a child acting way beyond his age. Zhong Zhen tried to calm her racing heartbeat and said to them, “Enough! You two better run home now. Both of you have work and school tomorrow. I can handle things from here, so do not worry.”
She was unsure whether Feng Beichen suspected her of anything, but right now she was concerned about her son’s health the most.
Wen He saw Zhong Zhen’s worrisome face and tried to console her, “As long as we stick to the plan, there shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck!”
“Good luck!” Zhong Zhen replied.
Over the years, she had learned to face all challenges with courage. She strongly believed that after every storm there would be calm.
After Wen He and Tianyou left, Zhong Zhen started to collect her thoughts. She remembered that someone had mentioned that Feng Beichen had a girlfriend who was in a comatose state. Could it be that she was admitted to this hospital as well?
If so, the woman should be on the same floor even though their backgrounds were totally different. She thought maybe the nurses might know something.
And so, she went to the nurses and got information that a woman named An Ran had been staying here since three years ago after she was transferred to this hospital.
The nurse also mentioned that An Ran went through an emergency resuscitation not long ago but her condition had since become stable. Too bad there wasn’t much improvement either which was a disappointment.
As long as Feng Beichen got distracted, he wouldn’t find out about the child’s background and the potential threat might be resolved.
Zhong Zhen paced back and forth the hallway, wishing for everything to fall into place. She hoped that her mother’s condition could stabilize, so that she could quickly settle down into her new job. Most importantly, she hoped that Zhong Tianyou could adapt to his new life in the kindergarten.
A doctor came in to do a routine checkup and saw a restless Zhong Zhen pacing about. He smiled and said to her, “Go home and rest. We will contact you immediately if there is any emergency. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Do you need to work?”
Zhong Zhen felt very touched with his caring words and replied, “Yes, that’s why I’m frustrated on how I should apply for leave to take care of my mother. May I leave now? Please do contact me if there is any problem.”
The doctor allowed her to return home since he sympathized with her greatly.
Once Zhong Zhen got into her car, all she could think of was heading home to get a fresh set of clothes.
If Wen He hadn’t gone to work yet, she could use the chance to discuss more with her. The incident just now where Feng Beichen had seen Zhong Tianyou was making her feel agitated.
Upon calling Wen He, she learned that they weren’t successful in hailing any cab around this hour, hence she offered to send them home instead.
The next day, after driving Zhong Tianyou to school early in the morning, she and Wen He finally had the chance to talk more.
But beside consoling each other, what more could they do?
“Don’t think too much. Just tell him that Tianyou is a relative’s child,” Wen He repeated what she had told Zhong Zhen.
It couldn’t be helped. The worst-case scenario would be Zhong Zhen’s boss finding out that she had given birth before.
After their long discussion, Zhong Zhen suddenly realized that she had forgotten to apply leave from Feng Beichen. With an upset expression, she sighed, “I’m so dead! I had totally forgotten to apply leave for today.”
Wen He had no choice but to console her, “Don’t overthink. Just give him a call and explain what happened. We had already settled everything for Tianyou, so don’t worry.”
Well, no matter what happens, we can only move forward even in this kind of situation.
Zhong Zhen suddenly remembered, “I did mention to him that I will be taking a half day off for today. With our earlier encounter at the hospital, he should understand my situation.”
She was an optimistic person who would face any challenges head on.
That’s right! Why am I stressing myself over this? As long as I play it cool, there shouldn’t be any problem. It’s a fact that once I let my emotions get to me, my secret would be let out soon too.
Zhong Zhen chose to go with the flow. She drove Wen He to work before she went home.
Just as she was preparing to drive off, Xi Anan came up to the front of her car. With a sarcastic tone, she said, “Oh my, you’re able to get a car within this short amount of time?”
